Rostelecom, Skolkovo and Nokia to set up pilot zone for next-generation 5G network

At the Open Innovations Forum that takes place in Moscow on October 16-18, 2017 at the Skolkovo technopark, PAO Rostelecom, Nokia, and the Skolkovo Foundation signed an agreement to set up a 5G pilot zone in the territory of the Skolkovo innovations center. The document was signed by Mikhail Oseevsky, President of PAO Rostelecom, Victor Vekselberg, President of the Skolkovo Foundation and Demetrio Russo, Vice-presidentin Eastern Europe, Nokia.

The signatories agreed upon scenarios of possible implementation of the fifth-generation wireless technologies which can be deployed in the frame of the project. The scenarios will demonstrate the capabilities of advanced communications technologies for their further deployment in different industries.

Mikhail Oseevsky, President, PAO Rostelecom:
"Rostelecom has sufficient network infrastructure and frequency resources to build a 5G pilot zone at Skolkovo. The agreement is a logical follow-up of Rostelecom's efforts aimed at building and testing 5G networks. In May 2017 the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Tatarstan to build and run a 5G network in the Republic."

In the framework of the 5G project in Skolkovo, Rostelecom will evaluate the usage of various segments of its frequency resource for advanced technologies, including IMT, with the use of LTE/LTE-Advanced systems.

Victor Vekselberg, President of the Skolkovo Foundation:
"Skolkovo today is not only the technopark and the University. It is a growing and fast developing city, with its first citizens, streets, avenues and shopping areas. It is logical that Skolkovo serves as a platform to test innovations for the city, developed by our residents and partners, including innovations for electric and unmanned transport, modern systems for electricity and heat supply, advanced construction technologies. These innovations’ tests are also important because they create a very favorable environment for the development of other technological projects and as such improve innovation ecosystem. I am confident that creation of 5G trial network by our technological partners – Rostelecom and Nokia will strongly support our innovation center. By testing and showcasing capabilities of the new generation of wireless technologies this project will foster fast deployment of 5G in Russia. "

Demetrio Russo, Head of Nokia in East Europe:
"Nokia is working with industry leaders around the globe to develop and test various 5G use-cases scenarios for different industries. We are therefore very excited to join forces with Rostelecom and Skolkovo to develop a 5G trial network in Russia. Nokia believes that collaborations such as this is critical for the successful introduction of a next generation wireless network, and in driving a 5G ecosystem in Russia".

5G is the new generation of radio systems and network architecture that will deliver extreme broadband, ultra-robust, low-latency connectivity and massive networking for society and for the Internet of Things. 5G will transform individual lives, economies and human connectivity as a whole. 5G will enable an entirely new array of ‘use cases, in addition to dramatically enhancing existing wireless applications.

5G will enable new possibilities for smart and productive applications, connected to a multitude of devices in a wide variety of commercial and industrial sectors.

Peak 5G speeds will be around 20Gbps which will be sufficient for hundreds of 8K (Ultra HD) streaming video in a cell First 5G standard specifications scheduled for 2018 and first commercial operation of 5G networks is expected in 2019.

5G forms a core part of the digital technology roadmaps of communications service providers and enterprises alike. It will be actively used for IoT, smart cities, smart manufacturing, smart home and smart transport.

Skolkovo Foundation is a non-commercial organization set up on the initiative of the President of the Russian Federation in September 2010. Its purpose is to mobilize Russia's resources for advanced applied research by establishing a favourable environment for R&D in five top priority technological areas: power efficiency, space exploration, biomedicine, nuclear and computing technologies. The Foundation is responsible for building and managing the Skolkovo Innovation Center regulated by a special law which provides the members (more than 1700, as of today) with special economic conditions. The total revenue of the members exceeded 130 billion rubles. They created 22.1 thousand jobs and registered 1100 patents. Another important part of the Skolkovo ecosystem is the research university the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) set up and operating with support from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. More than 2 million square meters of residential, industrial and administrative buildings will be constructed at Skolkovo by 2020. The innovations center will employ 35,000 people.
